Background
County Trail Planning
A vision of interconnected greenways
Dakota County knows people need trails, clean water and open space. To achieve this, the County has developed a Greenway Collaborative that pools county, city, state and other resources to connect city parks, regional parks, rivers, wetlands, open space, existing trails and activity centers into a cohesive system.
The Greenway Vision identifies 200 miles of regional greenway, two-thirds of which are on land currently in public or semipublic ownership. To learn more, visit the Dakota County Trail Planning webpage.
Veterans Memorial Greenway
Veterans Memorial Greenway
The Veterans Memorial Greenway (formerly Rich Valley Greenway) is a proposed regional trail and open space corridor that will provide a link between Lebanon Hills Regional Park and the Mississippi River in central Dakota County. The greenway will provide recreation for residents of Eagan and Inver Grove Heights and serve as a destination trail for the larger surrounding area.
The 5-mile corridor stretches east and west within the cities of Eagan and Inver Grove Heights. The proposed corridor’s surrounding land use includes primarily single-family residential neighborhoods and rural, undeveloped open space.
Changes to the Route
As part of the development of the 2020 Preliminary Engineering Study, the analysis showed that although the original master planned route was feasible, the topography of the route would require significant grading and would have too great of an impact on existing natural resources.
