Interpretive Memorial Design & Planning
Check back here for updates as the process continues.
Veterans Advisory Group
Dakota County worked with a Veteran’s Advisory Group (VAG) to develop a range of memorial concepts. The diverse members of the VAG represent different branches of the military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, as well as Gold Star Families who have lost a family member in service.
What is an Interpretative Memorial Plan?
Interpretation is "a purposeful approach to communication that facilitates meaningful, relevant, and inclusive experiences that deepen understanding, broaden perspectives, and inspire engagement with the world around us" (National Association for Interpretation)
As an interpretive memorial plan, the purpose is two-fold: 1) to honor and recognize the sacrifice made by Veterans and provide a place for healing (memorial) and 2) to provide stories that inform and inspire visitors about military service, whether or not they have previous understanding (interpretation).
Interpretive Design for Veterans
The video above features SEH’s Gary Randle, an Urban Designer and Veteran, as he describes what is meant by interpretive design and how we can use it to honor the service of our Veterans.
Examples of Interpretive Design
The images above show a range of ways that interpretive design can tell a story, engage our senses, and elicit emotional connections to stories.
